Photorealist Franz Gertsch has died

The Swiss painter Franz Gertsch died on 21 December at the age of 92. As a central representative of Photorealism in Europe, he achieved international recognition through his participation in documenta 5 in 1972.

Emil Nolde (1867-1956) is one of the most famous artists of European avant-garde. His current perception is shaped by historical mythmaking and its deconstruction. The Düsseldorf conceptual artist Mischa Kuball (* 1959), supported by the Nolde Stiftung Seebüll, set out to trace this ambivalent figure.

Lee Bontecou: On the passing of a pioneer

The US artist Lee Bontecou died on 8 November at the age of 91. In 1964, she was one of only ten female artists whose works were shown at documenta III. Out of a total of 325 artistic positions, this corresponded to a share of 2.8%.

An Artist of the Century: On the Passing of Pierre Soulages

Pierre Soulages died on 26 October at the age of 102: Born on Christmas Eve 1919, the master of abstraction was an exceptional figure in European painting throughout his life. He was a living monument of French culture and the last remaining participant in the first documenta in 1955.

A creative image factory within the documenta archiv: our newly founded "Documentation & Production" department was in constant motion throughout the duration of documenta fifteen. Coordinated by Michael Gärtner and Barbara Kiolbassa, the cameras, microphones and tripods rarely stood still.

Latest additions to the archive - new arrivals at the documenta archiv!

We are pleased to announce our latest additions to the documenta archiv: In addition to the multimedia archive of the cyberfeminist artists' group Old Boys Network (OBN), we have received extensive donations of photographs and slides by the photographer Jens Wächter for documenta 7 (1982) and curator Marc Nash, who was part of the curatorial team for Documenta 11 (2002).
