Prof. Dr. Nora Sternfeld (b. 1976) has been named the new documenta professor at Kunsthochschule Kassel. The Austrian scholar currently holds a professorship at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland. In time for the beginning of documenta 14 in Kassel, Universität Kassel has appointed a new faculty member with a presence in the international art world.

Sternfeld received her doctorate in Art Theory and Cultural Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 2012. In the same year, she became professor for Curating and Mediating Art at Aalto University. Previously, she had held various teaching positions, including one at Kunsthochschule Kassel in 2009. Her research interests include exhibition theory and practice, critical museum research, art education and education theory, as well as curatorial and artistic research.

“It is one of the essential goals of my research to maintain Kassel’s position as an internationally relevant location for exhibition theory and practice in the five-year periods between exhibitions,” stated Sternfeld.

The exact denomination of the professorship is “art history/documenta.” It is financed for a period of five years by the state of Hesse’s budget for “Innovation and Structural Development” and also supported by funding from the Hübner and Kennedy Foundation during the initial phase. The Kunsthochschule and Universität Kassel will strive to make the position permanent.

The documenta archiv is looking forward to a successful collaboration!
