It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Koyo Kouoh, who died unexpectedly on the night of May 9-10. Only last December, she had been appointed curator of the 61st Venice Art Biennale, which she would have been the first black woman to head next year.

Half a century ago, the appointment to the directorial team of documenta was a particular honor. With documenta 5, the first of two exhibitions in which Prof. Klaus Honnef participated, this was to change: now professional deferment rather than career advancement; questions, problems, and contradictions instead of aesthetic certainties.

Against the background of a dramatically changing definition of art which was significantly influenced by documenta 5 and 6, the presentation will focus on personal memories and shed light on internal discussions. Starting with documenta 6, photography and film appeared alongside painting, drawing, and sculpture as equally valid forms of artistic expression. Photographic material from the documenta archiv accompanies the presentation.

Organized in cooperation with the Kunsthochschule Kassel, University of Kassel.
