The in 2013 acquired photographic collection by Dieter Schwerdtle (1952–2009) has already began in 2015, thanks to a generous donation from »Impulse für Kassel-Stiftung«. Dieter Schwerdtle studied photography at the comprehensive school of Kassel under Prof. Floris M. Neusüss (born 1937). Since 1981 he has worked as a freelance photographer and soon specialized on documenting the local art scene in Kassel and the documenta in particular. He extensively photographed documenta exhibitions 6 to 11 and partly contributed photographic material to the »walking tours« series for the art magazine »Das Kunstforum«. The documenta archiv holds approximately 7.500 photographic prints, 450 contact sheets, 1.000 slides and 600 sheets of negative strips, all of which are nearly completely catalogued.
