The institution of the archive and the demands of the contemporary seem to stand in diametrical opposition to one another: How can the eternal past of that which is archived be connected with the fleeting present of the contemporary? How can the contemporary be archived, and archives opened up for the contemporary? And can the contemporary in fact ever really be captured? These questions will be discussed, among other things, with the help of the work of contemporary artists such as Ceal Floyer, whose video “drop” (2014) traces the moment a drop of water takes form and falls.

Knut Ebeling is professor for Media Theory and Aesthetics at the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin. He studied in Berlin and Paris, working in the fields of modern and contemporary philosophy, aesthetic theory, media of cultural memory (archive, collection, museum), theory, aesthetics and epistemology of material culture, and archaeology of contemporary art.
