Karl Oskar Blase 100: Studio Exhibition

Karl Oskar Blase, the “face of documenta”, would have turned one hundred years old on March 24, 2025. The Kassel-based graphic designer and professor of art and visual communication had been working for documenta since 1964 and had a unique influence on its appearance. To celebrate his milestone birthday, the documenta archiv is dedicating a multimedia studio exhibition to him in its Reading Room.

The third edition of the Festival des Grafischen Erzählens (Festival for Graphic Narration) presents for the first time orginal drawings and sketches by the graphic artist Hans Hillmann (1925-2014) from his classic illustration of Dashiell Hammett’s story “Fly Paper”. Hillmann, whose personal papers are maintained by the documenta archiv, is one of the most important German graphic designers and illustrators. His works were shown in the design and graphics category at documenta 3 in 1964.

An event organized by the Literaturhaus Nordhessen e. V. in cooperation with the documenta archiv and the School of Art and Design Kassel.
