Karl Oskar Blase, the “face of documenta”, would have turned one hundred years old on March 24, 2025. The Kassel-based graphic designer and professor of art and visual communication had been working for documenta since 1964 and had a unique influence on its appearance. To celebrate his milestone birthday, the documenta archiv is dedicating a multimedia studio exhibition to him in its Reading Room.

The documenta archiv presents photographs by Bernd Schlake in a small cabinet exhibition at its art library. The images were taken during the 100 days of documenta 14 in Kassel.

Schlakes involvement at the periphery of documenta 14 allows him to look behind the scenes during the installation process of the art works. He is able to record the reaction of the visitors to the exhibition. His close collaboration with participating artists is reflected in the personal shots which create an immediate impression of events.

The exhibition “Theatre of the spectacle. A cabinet exhibition by Bernd Schlake” will be on view during the opening hours of the art library.

An opening will be held at the October 20th, 2017 from 2 – 4 pm.

Curator: Anja Ziegler
