It is with great sorrow that we have learnt of the passing of Okwui Enwezor, the artistic director of documenta 11, who took the world art exhibition on a new path with his work here in Kassel. Enwezor was born in 1963 in Calabar, Nigeria and lived for a long time in New York. He curated the main exhibition of the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015 and was director of the Haus der Kunst in Munich from 2011 to June 2018. With his global approach to art, he opposed with international positions the prevailing Eurocentrism at an early stage, thereby opening up and substantially expanding contemporary art. He died at the age of 55.
