Art historian Birgitta Coers (born 1970) will be heading up the documenta archiv from October 1, 2020. Following her university career in Marburg and Tübingen, she has specialized in recent years in the physical and digital management of artists’ estates.

The Goethe-Institut, the documenta archiv and the Kunsthochschule Kassel (University of the Arts Kassel) /University of Kassel are launching their joint fellowship program for international young scientists and researching artists and curators at the documenta Institute.

During documenta 5 (1972), the French artist Ben Vautier (born 1935) created a "thinking room" at the ground floor of the Fridericianum, where he exhibited not only his art works but also himself. His contribution dealt with the much-discussed question of what art is, amongst other things.

Internships

The documenta archiv offers interns the opportunity to gain an insight into the working world of an art archive and to help in various fields. The working language is generally German.

 

Guidelines for a practical training at the documenta archiv

  • For students starting at the third term of their course
  • For trainees in the archive or library department
  • Only compulsory practical training applicants are possible
  • Duration is a minimum of 8 weeks or longer
  • Only for courses that meet the requirements of the documenta archiv (art history, history, archival, library and information science and documentation)
  • Please send us a short covering letter laying out specific requirements that need to be achieved and certificates of previous qualifications
  • A list of areas of the documenta archiv in which the practical training should take place is compulsory
  • Information to the desired timeframe of the practical training
  • Professional report after completion of the practical training
